I recently was attempting to install Symantec Enpoint Protection (SEP) on a computer and ran into an error. SEP told me that the “The System Administrator has set policies to prevent this installation”. Seeing as I am the administrator of this system I know that I didn’t set any policies like SEP mentioned.

One tool I came across for scanning your computer without having to install anything is Norton Security Scan (ftp://ftp.symantec.com/misc/tools/nss/).

It did a good job scanning, found a couple things and cleaned them and I was able to install SEP to prevent future infections.

Being the “computer guy” for most of my friends and family I often times get called to fix their computers. Most of the time this involves removing spyware (also known as malware) from a Windows computer. I have worked hard to train my firends and family to utilize the web to their advantage and to be cautious about what they download and what they click on. However, periodically the bad stuff makes it through and I get to clean up the mess. This means I have gotten pretty efficient at it by compiling a recommended list of tips as well as helpful software for dealing with malware.

Useful web surfing tips:

DO NOT USE MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER

Use a different Web Browser to surf the web. I recommend Mozilla Firefox (but Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera are all good choices)

Use something to block advertisements on the web (Ad companies probably hate me right now). Mozilla Firefox can utilize ‘extensions’ or ‘add-ons’ to enhance your web browsing experience. Ad Block Plus (click to install once you have Firefox installed) is one of my favorite because it simply kills all advertisements on a web page which means a few things for you:

Your web pages will load faster because there aren’t advertisements to load

You wont get annoyed with having some blinking ad on the screen while you try to read an article.

The chances of you accidentally clicking on a malicious advertisement are zero. This means that the chances of you installing malware/spyware are much lower.

Be smart about what you download. If you want to download new templates for your sewing machine and you heard you can get them from xyz.com. Google “is xyz.com safe” and read about it before you install the xyz.com software on your computer.

Google, Google, Google! If you don’t know how to do something or are unsure about something, Google it. Chances are someone somewhere in the world has done that same thing and documented it on the web.

If you think your computer is infected with something use the software recommended below. Most of it is free or offers a limited free version:

My favorite (and best I have used) spyware scanner and removal tool is Super Anti-Spyware Portable. SAS is free, the portable version simply scans your computer without installing anything, and it is fast and thorough.

To use SAS Portable, first download it from the SAS Website (it will be a random filename with a .com extention on it. This is done to prevent malicious software from blocking the SAS software from running)

Double-click the file you downloaded to run it.

Choose your language

Once started you will see the main screen (see below)

Click Check for Updates first to tell SAS to download any new program updates from it’s website

Once that is done, click Scan Your Computer and choose Perform Full Scan

Sit back, relax, and watch the scanning magic happen

Once the scan is complete you simply click Next to allow SAS to remove any malicious software it found.

Ad-Aware is another good free malware scanner. To use it simply download it, double-click it to install, watch it update itself, and perform a scan.

RUN AN UP-TO-DATE VIRUS SCANNER! This doesn’t mean you have to get in the car and drive to Best Buy to buy one. There are several good free AV (Anti-Virus) scanners out there. One that I suggest (and have used in the past) is AVG. AVG has been around for awhile and makes a good free AV scanner. Download it, double-click it to install it, watch it update itself, and scan your computer. AVG will sit in the background periodically scanning your computer to make sure everything is alright.

So there you have it, my basic list of the right way to do things (according to me).

Live it, Love it, Bazinga!
